The feeder ticked over at nine o'clock on a ranch outside Uvalde, and the thermal screen lit up before the corn had finished scattering. Six pale shapes pushed out of a mesquite thicket in a loose line, snouts down, moving with the unhurried confidence of animals that have never once been shot at during daylight. That confidence is exactly the problem Texas landowners have been fighting for two decades, because a sounder that only ever sees a farmer at noon learns nothing about the rifle waiting in the dark. By the time the lead sow reached the corn, four more hogs had slipped in from a different tree line, and the group had grown to eleven — a normal-sized wrecking crew for one 40-acre milo field. Ten minutes later the field looked like it had been rotary-tilled. This is the version of hog hunting that never makes a highlight reel: no dramatic stalk, no called shot at 300 yards, just a slow, methodical culling exercise conducted through a thermal scope three hours after the sun has gone down.

Night hunting hogs on private ag land is legal, effective and, once you understand the gear and the legal picture, genuinely one of the more accessible forms of hunting in Texas. It is also easy to get wrong in ways that cost money, sour a landowner relationship, or produce a truck bed with nothing in it by 2am.

Why Hogs, Why After Dark

Feral hogs are not native to Texas and carry no closed season, no bag limit and, under Texas Parks and Wildlife Department rules, essentially no protection at all. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension has estimated the state's feral hog population at somewhere north of 1.5 million animals, spread across all but a handful of the state's 254 counties, and the same research puts the annual damage bill to Texas agriculture at roughly $400 million a year in torn-up pasture, flattened fence lines and ruined crops. A sow can produce two litters a year, four to six piglets each, which is the reason a landowner who clears ten hogs off one field in March can be looking at two dozen again by August.

Hogs are also mostly nocturnal by the time they have been hunted even once, which is where night hunting stops being a novelty and becomes a necessity. A sounder pressured during daylight will shift its feeding almost entirely into the hours between 9pm and 4am within a couple of weeks, and daylight sightings on working ag ground drop close to zero. Thermal optics went from a niche, expensive curiosity to the standard tool for Texas hog control over roughly the last decade, mostly because they are the only practical way to find an animal that has already learned to avoid people.

What Texas Law Actually Allows

Texas treats feral hogs as a nongame, exotic species rather than managed wildlife, and that classification is what makes most of this legal in the first place. There is no closed season and no bag limit on private land, the hunting-hours restriction that limits deer and turkey to daylight does not apply to hogs, and landowners or hunters with written landowner consent can legally take them after dark using thermal or night-vision equipment.

A Texas hunting licence is still required for anyone hunting hogs who is not the landowner or specifically exempted under the state's licence exemptions — a detail some out-of-state hunters miss, and then have an awkward conversation about with a game warden.

Suppressors are legal for hunting in Texas, and most serious night-hunting outfits run one: it protects hearing through a string of follow-up shots in the dark and does not spook the rest of a sounder the way an unsuppressed muzzle blast does. Buying one means an ATF Form 4 and a $200 tax stamp. Budget for that wait well before the season you actually want to hunt, not the week before it starts.

Thermal Glass — Scope, Clip-On or Handheld

Three ways to run thermal exist, and which one makes sense depends mostly on whether hogs are the only thing being hunted or whether the same rifle needs to pull daylight duty on deer.

  • A dedicated thermal riflescope, such as a Pulsar Thermion or an ATN ThOR, replaces the day optic outright and is the simplest setup for a rifle that only ever comes out after dark.
  • A thermal clip-on, like a Trijicon Snipe-IR or a Pulsar Krypton, mounts in front of an existing day scope and keeps the zero on a rifle that also pulls deer-season duty — more expensive up front, but it means owning one less rifle.
  • Handheld thermal monoculars or binoculars, the Pulsar Axion and ATN BinoX among others, are not for shooting through at all. They are for scanning a field first to decide whether it is even worth setting up, and most serious hog operations end up owning one regardless of which riflescope option gets picked.

Resolution matters more than the marketing copy admits. A 384-sensor unit is genuinely fine for spotting hogs moving in a field at 150 yards, but the picture gets soft and hard to place a crosshair on cleanly past that distance, especially on a moving animal. Stretch the budget to a 640-resolution scope if you need one rifle to cover both close feeder work and longer shots across a big pasture — the jump from roughly $2,000 to $3,500 stings, but the difference in actually reading a clean vital-zone picture at 200 yards is not subtle.

Calibre and Suppressor Choices That Hold Up

A .223 will kill a 90lb hog just fine and utterly fail to anchor a 250lb boar with a two-inch shield of cartilage across its shoulder.

That gap is the entire argument for stepping up in calibre for serious night hog work. The .308 Winchester remains the default choice for a reason — enough energy to punch through heavy shoulder cartilage on a mature boar, widely available ammunition, and mild enough recoil to stay on target for a fast follow-up shot on the next hog in the sounder. The .300 Blackout has become the other serious contender, mostly because its subsonic loadings pair with a suppressor to produce almost no report at all, which matters when the goal is working through six or eight animals in one sitting without scattering the rest of the field. Skip .223 Remington for anything beyond small hogs on a management cull — it is popular because AR platforms are common, not because it is the right tool for a 200lb Texas boar.

Bullet construction counts as much as calibre. A hog's shoulder shield is genuinely tough tissue, and a soft, fast-expanding bullet built for whitetail deer can fail to reach the vitals on a big boar taken quartering-on. Bonded or monolithic-copper hunting bullets hold together through that shield far more reliably, and most experienced Texas hog hunters will not run anything else once they have watched a cheap bullet fragment on contact and leave a wounded animal to run.

Reading a Sounder You Can't Quite See

A thermal scope solves the seeing problem, but it does nothing for the thinking problem, and the thinking problem is what actually determines whether six hogs turn into one hog or into an empty field. Wind direction still matters more than anything else in the setup, because a hog's nose is dramatically better than its eyes, and a sounder that catches human scent on the breeze will vanish before a single shot is fired, thermal optics or not. Shooting order inside a sounder matters just as much: taking the rear animals first, working from back to front through the group, keeps the shots from immediately spooking the lead hogs into a dead run, and a patient shooter working methodically that way can often clear four or five animals off one feeder before the survivors bolt. Shoot the lead sow first, by contrast, and the whole group typically scatters after a single shot, leaving the rest of the night's work undone. Moon phase changes the picture too — a bright moon pushes hog movement later into the night and thins out early activity on open fields, while a dark, overcast night tends to bring hogs onto feeders and food plots earlier and in bigger numbers. None of this is complicated, but it is the difference between a truck bed with two hogs in it and one with eight, and it is learned by sitting through enough slow, quiet nights to notice the pattern rather than by reading a spec sheet on a thermal scope.

The Mistakes That End a Night Early

Most bad nights trace back to the same handful of errors, and almost none of them are equipment failures. Setting up too close to a feeder with the wind wrong is the most common one — hogs will smell a hunter fifty yards away long before thermal glass ever picks them up, and the field simply stays empty all night for reasons that have nothing to do with the rifle. Rushing the first shot before the whole sounder has settled onto the corn is another: fire too early and half the group melts back into the brush before the follow-up shots have a chance.

Positive target identification is not optional after dark, thermal glass or not — a warm shape at 150 yards in green-and-white thermal contrast can look enough like a hog to fool an impatient shooter, and it has occasionally turned out to be a calf, a dog, or worse. Every serious operation treats a hard visual confirmation, not just a thermal silhouette, as the line before the trigger gets touched, and any outfit that skips that step is one bad night away from a conversation nobody wants to have with a neighbour.

The last one is simpler and gets ignored anyway: talk to the landowner about the actual damage pattern before picking a stand location. A feeder set up because it is convenient to reach rarely sits where the hogs are actually working the fence line, and the best sign — rooted-up pasture, wallows, rubbed fence posts — usually points to a spot fifty yards from wherever the ATV trail happens to end.
