Most bowhunters wait until the first cool snap to pull the compound out of the case, and that's exactly backward. By the time September arrives, archery ranges fill up with the same crowd trying to sight in before opening weekend, indoor lanes book solid, and any problem you find with your rest or your broadheads gets solved under time pressure instead of patience. Right now, in mid-August, the range is empty, the daylight lasts until eight, and you've got three or four weekends before most Southern and Midwestern archery seasons open in the first half of September. That window matters more than people give it credit for. A bow that shot field points into a dime-sized group in June can throw broadheads six inches off at 30 yards by August if the cams drifted out of sync or the rest shifted a sixteenth of an inch during storage — and you won't know until you actually test it, not assume it. Waiting until the week before your hunt to find that out means either skipping the range work entirely or walking into the woods with a setup you don't trust.

Treat this stretch as a diagnostic phase, not a warm-up. Shoot broadheads and field points side by side before you touch anything else, because the gap between those two groups tells you exactly where the problem lives.

Start at the Rest and the Cams, Not the Broadhead

Every forum thread about broadhead accuracy jumps straight to blade selection, but a broadhead can't fix a bow that isn't tuned. Center-shot alignment is the first thing to check: with the arrow nocked, the tip should sit roughly in line with the string when you look down the riser from behind the bow. If it's noticeably off to one side, the rest needs adjustment before anything else happens. A QAD Ultrarest HDX (around $180) or a Hamskea Hybrid Hunter Pro ($200-plus) holds that position better than a $40 whisker biscuit, and if you're chasing tack-driving accuracy on a bow you plan to shoot for years, the upgrade earns its price. Cam timing matters just as much and gets ignored more often — on a two-cam bow, both cams should reach full draw and let off at the same instant, verified by checking the draw-stop witness marks against the manufacturer's spec, usually printed on the cam itself or available from the shop that set up your bow.

Get a bow press or a shop with one before you touch draw-length or timing adjustments yourself. Twisting cables by eye without a press is how compound bows end up with cracked limbs, and that's not a repair you want to discover the week before opening day.

Draw Weight and Broadhead Deployment

If you're running a bow under 55 pounds of draw weight, this is the moment to check whether your broadhead choice still makes sense — mechanical heads need enough kinetic energy to open cleanly on impact, and marginal setups sometimes don't deliver it.

Paper Tuning: The Six-Foot Test That Catches Everything

Paper tuning is the cheapest diagnostic tool in archery and most hunters skip it entirely. Hang a sheet of butcher paper or a paper tuning frame roughly six feet in front of a target backstop, stand six to eight feet behind the paper, and shoot a fletched arrow through it at a slight downward angle so the tear shows clearly. A clean bullet hole with three small fletching slits means the arrow is flying true. Anything else tells you something specific: a tear with the nock end high means the rest needs to move down slightly, a tear with the nock left means the rest needs to move right, and a persistent tear that won't clean up no matter what you adjust usually points back to arrow spine — the shaft is too stiff or too weak for your draw weight and point weight combination.

Don't chase a paper tear for more than fifteen minutes without stepping back to think about what you're actually seeing. If you've made three adjustments in the same direction and the tear keeps getting worse, you've probably misread which way to move the rest — stop, re-check the tear direction chart, and start over rather than compounding the mistake.

Walk-Back Tuning for Windage at Real Distance

Paper tuning gets the arrow flying straight at six feet, but it won't catch a horizontal alignment problem that only shows up at distance. Walk-back tuning does. Hang a vertical line — a strip of blue painter's tape works fine — on a target, then shoot from 10, 20, and 30 yards while aiming at the same spot on that line each time, adjusting your sight for elevation only. If your arrows walk consistently left or right as distance increases instead of stacking on the vertical line, the rest is out of horizontal alignment relative to the string, not the sight. Move the rest, not the sight pins, to correct it. This test takes twenty minutes and it's the single most reliable way to confirm your setup will still group broadheads at hunting distances, not just at the seven yards most people bother sighting in from.

Broadhead Choice: Fixed-Blade vs. Mechanical for This Season

Mechanical broadheads like the Rage Hypodermic ($35-45 for a three-pack) fly almost identically to field points because the blades stay folded until impact, which makes tuning dramatically easier for anyone whose bow isn't perfectly dialed. Fixed-blade heads — the G5 Montec, the Muzzy Trocar, both around $30 for three — fly more like a small wing and will expose any tuning flaw your field-point groups were hiding. The catch: mechanical blades steal roughly 15 to 20 percent of the arrow's kinetic energy opening on impact, which matters if your bow is already on the lower end of ethical draw weight for deer-sized game, or if you're likely to hit heavier bone on a quartering shot. Fixed blades punch through with less energy loss and handle bone contact better, but they demand a truly tuned bow to fly straight.

If your paper tear was clean and your walk-back groups stacked tight, go fixed-blade — you've done the work and you'll get the deeper penetration. If you're still chasing a stubborn tear two weeks before season, mechanicals are the honest choice, not a compromise.

The Group That Proves You're Ready

One inch is the difference between a clean pass-through and a blood trail that dead-ends at the property line.

Shoot a three-arrow group with field points at 20 yards, then shoot the identical group with your hunting broadheads without touching the sight. If both groups land inside roughly 1.5 inches of each other, center to center, your bow is hunt-ready and you can move the test out to 30 yards to confirm it holds at distance. If the broadhead group opens up or shifts noticeably from the field-point group, the bow isn't tuned yet — don't blame the arrow, and don't just switch broadhead brands hoping a different blade shape fixes it. Go back to paper tuning first. Most hunters who show up frustrated at the range have skipped straight to buying a new broadhead three times before checking whether the actual problem was a rest sitting an eighth of an inch off center the entire season.

Give yourself two more weekends after this one before opening day, even after you hit that 1.5-inch group. Humidity changes string stretch slightly, and a final check the week of your hunt costs you twenty minutes against the alternative — walking into the stand on a guess.
